Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was a famous African American woman because she brought hundreds of slaves to freedom in just 10 years. Harriet Tubman saved many of those slaves with the help of the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was a secret chain of houses that kept the slaves safe on their journey to the North were they could be free.
Why Was She Famous? Harriet Tubman was born in the 1820s. She was born a slave in Dorchester Country, Maryland. When Harriet was younger she worked as a house servant. When she got older and stronger she was sent to work in the fields. Harriet was always strong during these difficult times. She would always stand up for someone who she thought was being judged unfairly. One time Harriet was trying to protect her friend from the overseer. The overseer saw what Harriet Tubman was doing and got angry. So he threw a two-pound weight aiming for her friend, but missed. He hit Harriet on the head. After the hit she never fully recovered and she would sometimes fall into deep sleeps.
About Harriet Tubman In 1844 Harriet married a free black man named John Tubman. A few years later Harriet became very scared when she heard that all the slaves on the plantaion were going to be sold. So in her feared state
she decided to run away. She got help from a friendly white man and she made it to Philadelphia. In Philadelphia she found work and earned money. She then went back to Maryland and brought her sister to freedom. She also went to find her husband, but he was going to marry another woman. Harriet was mad so she saved others instead.
